Like most people, you're probably amazed at how far down rates on home mortgages have come in recent months. Although the time may be right to purchase a new home, finding the right property is not always that simple.

If you're looking to jump into the housing market, you might consider checking out one of these books that detail the ins, outs and pitfalls of buying a home before you get started:

"Smart Guide to Buying a Home," by Alfred and Emily Glossbrenner, John Wiley & Sons, 1999 ($10.95). It's a source book that offers home buying pros and cons and explains how to find the right mortgage.

"Keys to Buying and Owning a Home," 3rd ed., by Jack P. Friedman, Barron's, 2000 ($7.95). It is a useful handbook that covers broker selection, loan qualification, taxes and more.

"Home Buyer's Checkbook," by Robert Irwin, McGraw-Hill, 2000 ($12.95). It provides a list that take in all kinds of buying considerations, inside and outside a prospective home.
