Safety: Highway Patrol honored for role in homeland security

The Kansas Highway Patrol recently received special recognition for making sure hazardous materials in the state are secure.

The U.S. Department of Transportation presented a certificate of appreciation to Highway Patrol Supt. Don Brownlee last week.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the Highway Patrol conducted 900 safety and security checks at motor carrier facilities that store or transport hazardous materials. Most of the checks were made by members of the Patrol's Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program. A total of four companies were referred to the FBI for additional investigation.

The Highway Patrol greatly assisted the transportation department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in enforcing hazardous material security, said Teri Graham, the federal agency's state director.
