She was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Emporia, the daughter of Martin and Inez (Putnam) Hoffman. She graduated from Emporia State Teachers College and Central Missouri State University, and she taught in Strong City, Kansas City, Kan., and Piper School District. She taught art and special education and was a school counselor.
Mrs. Berman was a member of Unity Church of Lawrence, a former member of the church board and a member of Earth Peace. She also was a member of Wolf Women.
Survivors include her husband, Raoul, a daughter, Michelle Manners, Dallas; two sons, Bill Manners, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Phil Manners, Lawrence; five grandchildren, and a brother, Dale Hoffman, Kansas City, Kan.
