Reading, writing and arithmetic.

A good start in the three Rs, those building blocks for educated minds, is essential to academic success. But what does it take to lead students to a strong grasp of the basics?

This week, the Journal-World, 6News and World Online are collaborating on "The 3Rs: Basics of Excellence," a series examining the successful approaches of three Lawrence elementary schools in teaching reading, writing and math.

The series of stories will demonstrate that successful academic programs are grounded in the attributes of many successful businesses and organizations: teamwork, innovation, high expectations and stable leadership.

And they illustrate how challenging it can be to translate success at one school to an entire district.

Starting at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday on 6News and Tuesday in the Journal-World, the series will take you into the classrooms at New York, Wakarusa Valley and Hillcrest schools to find out what works.

Here's the lineup:

Monday on 6News and Tuesday in the J-W New York's innovative literacy program.

Tuesday on 6News and Wednesday in the J-W Young writers' haven in Wakarusa Valley.

Wednesday on 6News and Thursday in the J-W Hillcrest's by-the-numbers excellence in math.

Next Sunday in the J-W A look at the challenges of expanding the individual schools' success stories to all students in the district.
