HAYS: Coloradoan named Hays city manager

Randy Gustafson, city manager of Sterling, Colo., for the past 16 years, was named the new city manager for Hays Thursday.

Gustafson, who starts work in March, will get $84,000 a year in base salary.

WICHITA: Child's slayer convicted of first-degree murder

A Wichita man was convicted Friday of first-degree murder in a drive-by shooting that killed a 16-month-old girl who slept on the couch of her Wichita home.

A Sedgwick County jury also found Michael Walker, 20, guilty of criminal discharge of a firearm in the June shooting of Lexus Mathis. Police have said the shooting was gang-related.

WICHITA: Jury convicts suspect for train's derailment

A federal jury has convicted a Wichita man of causing an Aug. 29 freight train wreck near Mulvane that resulted in millions of dollars in damages and forced the evacuation of more than 100 people.

Ricky Alcorn, 28, of Wichita, was found guilty Friday of one count of willfully derailing, disabling or wrecking a train. He could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. No date was set for sentencing.

Alcorn testified the derailment was an accident that happened when his truck got stuck on a construction site.

OLATHE: Former editor files for county commission

Former newspaper editor Chuck Kurtz has announced he's running for the Johnson County Commission.

Kurt, 51, of Olathe, worked for 33 years as photographer, reporter and editor of "The Olathe Daily News" before becoming a consultant for the Olathe School District.

He said he wants the county to become a stronger voice in state and federal politics.
