To the editor:
I am writing this letter in response to the article in the Journal-World about the mother who abandoned her baby and was located because of her seeking medical attention for complications.
It states in the article that charges may be pressed against her. I am appalled! Obviously the Ottawa Police Department would have rather found the baby in a dumpster or worse yet killed in a dumpster since that is exactly what the next person who has a child will do fearing charges pressed against them.
What this woman did was very admirable. She took a chance and left the little girl somewhere where she could be cared for and the authorities are now threatening to punish her for it. How many of you would have had the courage to do what she did? She chose to give that baby life. She didn't choose to rip it apart in an abortion. She didn't choose to throw her away in a dumpster. She made the right decision, a very hard decision, and now she risks punishment.
When are you people going to wake up and stop doing this. Many years ago, when someone needed help they could find it. All they need do is ask. Nowadays if you ask you either get charges pressed against you for doing something someone else thinks is wrong or you have SRS wedged so far into your life that your life and your children's lives are not your own.
Authorities say to seek help when you have problems, this mother did, and now she risks punishment for it. This is the reason why there are so many abortions and abused children in the world because no one can seek help. Instead they are faced with charges. Good job! You have now just put many other children at risk. I hope you are proud. I also hope that you will step back and rethink this.
