Topeka welcomes torch
The early birds caught the Olympic Torch on Friday in Topeka.
The torch, on its way to the Salt Lake City Winter Games via a nationwide relay, was in the Kansas capital city early Friday, where it was carried by 20 runners before leaving for Wichita and points south.
Among those participating in the relay (in above photo) were Wynne Dillon, left, and Brenna Hockenberger.
Dillon, of DeSoto, is a district manager for Dillons stores in northeast Kansas. She was selected because of her company's work with children's activities through the March of Dimes, Boys and Girls Club, Muscular Dystrophy Assn. and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Social services: March, rally to protest proposed budget cuts
Area residents wanting to protest proposed cuts in the state's social services budget can take part in a march and rally Monday in Topeka.
The march will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Topeka Independent Resource Center, Fifth and Jackson streets. The rally will be on the south steps of the Capitol. It's expected to last until 4 p.m.
Coinciding with the start of the 2002 legislative session, the march and rally are being organized by the newly formed Disabled, Elderly and Workers Coalition for Budget Fairness.

Education: KU official to speak at event for Martin Luther King Jr.
Topeka A Kansas University official and two Lawrence students will help Gov. Bill Graves celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Graves will lead a march through the Capitol at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Janet Murguia, executive vice chancellor for university relations at KU, will be the featured speaker at the event.
Two South Junior High School students will be honored for their King-related artwork during the ceremony.
Margaret Pendleton took first place in the eighth-grade category. Kate Truscello, a ninth-grader, took first place in the seventh through ninth-grade division. Their artwork will be on display at the Capitol during the ceremony.
