More underclassmen leaving school for draft
Add LSU All-American wide receiver Josh Reed and Michigan State running back T.J. Duckett to the already impressive list of underclassmen declaring for the NFL draft.
Reed and Duckett, along with Tennessee wide receiver Donte Stallworth and Washington tight end Jerramy Stevens said Thursday they were passing up a final year of eligibility to play in the NFL next season.
Several other underclassmen announced Thursday they were returning to school, including All-American linebacker E.J. Henderson, Wisconsin wide receiver Lee Evans and Penn State defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy.
Today is the deadline for players with remaining college eligibility to decide whether to enter their names in the draft.
Holmgren, McGinnis to coach in Senior Bowl
Mobile, Ala. Seattle's Mike Holmgren will coach the North team in the Jan. 26 Senior Bowl and Arizona's Dave McGinnis will lead the South. The Seahawks just missed postseason play, going 9-7. The Cardinals were 7-9. Both coaches will bring their entire staffs, including the training, video and equipment workers.
Glenn suspended by Pats
Foxboro, Mass. New England receiver Terry Glenn was suspended for the playoffs on Thursday after missing practices and meetings. It was the third suspension for Glenn this season. The Patriots, winners of the AFC East title, start playoff competition Jan. 19. Coach Bill Belichick was not available for comment.
Newton indicted on federal drug counts
Dallas A grand jury indicted former NFL lineman Nate Newton on federal drug-trafficking counts. The indictment, dated Tuesday, alleges that Newton and three other suspects conspired to possess and distribute marijuana.
Newton, who lives in East Ellijay, Ga., is a six-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman who helped Dallas win three Super Bowls in the 1990s.
Newton, 40, has been held without bail in Seagoville, a southeast Dallas suburb, since his arrest on Dec. 12. At the time, he was free on $100,000 bail in connection with similar charges in Louisiana a few weeks earlier. Newton was driving a van following another vehicle when Louisiana state police arrested him with 213 pounds of marijuana.
McNair, George healing
Nashville, Tenn. Tennessee quarterback Steve McNair and running back Eddie George had arthroscopic surgery Thursday. McNair had bone spurs removed from his shoulder, while George had an ankle cleaned out to alleviate the pain that plagued him throughout the season.
Burress cited for failing to appear in court
Cleveland Pittsburgh receiver Plaxico Burress missed a court appearance after being cited with carrying an open alcoholic beverage container on a downtown street.
Burress, 24, was cited Dec. 24 in the city's Warehouse nightclub district, said police spokeswoman Lt. Sharon MacKay.
