INDEPENDENCE, KAN. Services for Lelah May Hughes, 83, Independence, Kan., will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Webb & Rodrick Funeral Home Chapel, Independence. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Elk City.
Mrs. Hughes died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in Clarinda, Iowa.
She was born Sept. 8, 1918, near Elk City, the son of Lee and Etta (Wright) Ferguson.
She grew up in the Sedan and Elk City area in the Hale community. She graduated from eighth grade at Hardrock School.
She lived with her husband in Elk City before moving to Independence and then to Chanute, where she managed a ladies clothing store, the K Shop. After her husband's death, she served as house mother for the Phi Mu fraternity at Baker University, Baldwin. She was a member of First Christian Church, Fredonia.
She married Glenn Hughes on Sept. 15, 1934, in Independence. He died July 27, 1978.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Stanley, Clarinda, Iowa; a sister, Marie Hughes, Independence; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A son died earlier.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time Saturday.
The family suggests memorials to American Diabetes Foundation, sent in care of the funeral home, 306 W. Main St., Independence 67301.
