It's believed alcohol may have played a part in a three-vehicle accident early Friday morning that injured two Lawrence Police officers and two motorists.

The accident occurred about 3 a.m. Friday when a car hit an unmarked police car in the 2100 block of Haskell Avenue.

Police spokesman Mike Pattrick says the two officers stopped a sport utility vehicle for a traffic violation. An officer was walking the driver of the sport utility vehicle to the side of the road when a car drove up and struck the back of the police car, pushing the police car into the officer and the driver, injuring them.

A second police officer was in the back of the sport utility vehicle searching it and was also thrown by the force of the collision when the patrol car was pushed into the sport utility vehicle.

The driver of the third car that struck the police car also was injured, police said.

All of the injured were taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.
