To the editor:
Criticism by Mr. Finch in Monday's J-W of Coach Roy Williams is without justification. Coach Williams uses idioms to relate the importance of playing defense to his players. No one could possible think any player or coach would be executed for failure to play Division I. However, the team's performance, and coach's job security, are predicated on the necessary fundamentals of defense instructed by Coach Williams and his staff.
We can also be proud of the job he does as both coach and recruiter. He brings in quality young student athletes who represent the University of Kansas well both on and off the basketball court. Coach Williams may not have brought a national title, but his teams play hard and are very entertaining to watch. This translates into a great deal of enthusiasm and pride for the community. I do have faith that national title which has eluded Coach Willliams will one day be in his grasp. We should all be proud of the fine job Coach Williams has done at KU and what a treasure he is to our community.
