Memorial services for Ruth Boyce Stringham, 103, Lawrence, will be at a later date. She was cremated.

Mrs. Stringham died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at Presbyterian Manor, Lawrence, where she had lived since December 2000.

She was born Oct. 9, 1898, in Douglas Township, west of Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of Marcus James and Grace Boyce. She attended local schools.

Mrs. Stringham graduated from Grinnell College as a Phi Beta Kappa honor student with an associate's degree in mathematics in 1922.

She worked in an office at Des Moines (Iowa) University in 1923. In 1924, she went home to help with the farm work and care for her ill younger brother. She then went to work for a bank in Des Moines before she was married. She moved to Lawrence in 1930. She then worked at Gill Real Estate and Insurance Agency, where she continued until age 69.

Mrs. Stringham was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active with programs including Sunday School and Women's Society. She also was church treasurer.

She was a Girl Scout leader, PTA member and a member of American Association of University Women and Phi Beta Kappa. She was a longtime member of Ladies' Literary League, a founding member of the Pilot Club and served on Meals on Wheels and the Lawrence Hospital Auxiliary.

She married R. Paul Stringham on Sept. 2, 1926, at her farm home. He died in 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Helen N. Fridblom, Lawrence, and Dorothy Ferguson, Raymore, Mo.; a son, Howard, Lawrence; a sister, Alma Bunnell, Cedar Falls, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the R.P. and Ruth Stringham Memorial Fund at First Baptist Church, sent in care of the funeral home.
