Hoopsters Third: Lawrence Hoopsters seventh grade finished third at the Tomahawk Holiday basketball tournament in Overland Park. The Hoopsters clipped the Olathe Lakers in the third-place game to finish the meet with a 4-2 record.
Ottawa Tourney: Ottawa High's gym will be the site of a boys and girls 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Jan. 26. It's open to first through sixth graders. For information, call Gary Shefield at 785 242-1311.
Seventh Grade Champs: Sport 2 Sport seventh grade Jayhawks won the Mid America Youth Basketball Winter Nationals in Lawrence and the Little Apple Classic in Manhattan. Team members are Michael Bird, Damian Dillon, Ryan Dougherty, Ben Harvey, Ryan Kearns, Bryan Murphy, Ryan Murphy, John Novotny, Chance Riley and Chris Witthaus.
DCABA Meeting: Douglas County Amateur Baseball Assn. will conduct a quarterly meeting at 6:30 p.m. next Wednesday in the commons area at Free State High.
LGA Placers: Lawrence Gymnastics Academy had several placers at the National Judges Cup meet last weekend in St. Louis, Mo. At Level Eight, Kara Kellison was sixth, Mallory West seventh, Ashley Sakumura 11th and Jillian Hay 13th in all-around. At Level Seven, Meredith West was 12th and Kathy Heflin 15th. And at Level Six, Chelsey Orburn was sixth, Adrienne Struble eighth and Dianna Torgerson 11th.
Youth Bowling Sign-up Day: The Lawrence Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA) will conduct a sign-up session on from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at at Royal Crest Lanes. This is for the Spring Session which will conduct league play starting Jan. 19 and run through early May. League play will be conducted weekly on Saturday mornings. YABA bowling is open to all youth ages 3 through 21, and includes league play in one of four leagues based on age. There also is PeeWee (bumper) bowling available for the first time for youth ages 7 and under.
Hockey victory: Lawrence Free State Hockey team defeated Shawnee Mission South in an overtime shootout. FS trailed 6-5 until David Knight scored the tying goal with 21 seconds left. The 5-man OT shootout ended in a 2-2 tie as Ian Pope and Knight each scored for LFS. In the sudden death shootout, goalie Damon Mar stopped the next SMS shot and the game was won with a Matt Lawrence score.
Indoor soccer: Lawrence Parks and Recreation is continuing to take late registrations for those (K-6) interested in participating in the 2002 Indoor Soccer League. Stop by the Holcom Park Recreation Center if you are interested in signing up.
Kaw Valley soccer: The Kaw Valley Force U-12 soccer team played for the All American Sports Premier League Championship and fell, 5-4. The team finished with a 7-2 record. Team members are: Nathan Ideus, Brian Sims, Colton Johnson, Nathan Hoffman, Anthony Brown-Davis, Alex McKee, Justin Ziegler, Taylor Bussinger, Garrick Valverde, Greg Glatz, Brock Norwood, Gyer Vierthaler, Blake Armstrong, Adam Casasy, Clay Larson and Andrew Heck. The coach is Mauro Nobre.
