Ottawa The mother of a infant girl abandoned at Ransom Memorial Hospital sought medical treatment late Tuesday for complications stemming from the birth.
Ottawa Police interviewed the woman at the hospital and medical staff say she will have a complete recovery, said Police Chief Jeff Herrman.
The mother is a 23-year-old Ottawa woman but police declined to release her name.
During a Tuesday night interview, the mother told detectives she abandoned the baby early Monday because of a number of personal and financial problems, Herrman said. The woman also told detectives that she does not want the baby.
Police planned to send reports on the incident to the Franklin County Attorney's Office. A determination will then be made whether charges will be filed against the mother.
An employee in County Attorney John Dowell's office said late Wednesday afternoon the police reports had not yet been received.
Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services officials have said the baby would be placed in a foster home and ultimately put up for adoption through the Kansas Children's Service League.
The baby was found shortly after 5 a.m. Monday wrapped in a blanket and abandoned in a hallway near the hospital emergency room. A hospital worker found the girl, thought to have been only hours old.
Dubbed Abby Dawn Doe by hospital staff, the baby was healthy. She remained in the hospital Wednesday.
