Topeka — Gov. Bill Graves today released his proposed state budget and immediately condemned it.
In a note at the start of the budget, Graves wrote that the $4.3 billion plan would make deep cuts in education, highways and social services.
On Monday the first day of the 2002 legislative session Graves will release a package to raise new revenues to restore some of the proposed cuts.
Graves said he outlined the cuts because he is required by state law to provide a spending plan within current revenue estimate.
The budget plan would reduce per pupil spending from $3,870 to $3,712. It would also cut funding to regents universities, including Kansas University, by 3.8 percent.
Graves also said several highway projects would be delayed.
