On Jan. 9, 1902, the Lawrence World's headline read "A Shooting Scrape," and the accompanying story told, "A lively shooting scrape took place on the Poehler corner (southeast corner of Ninth and Massachusetts streets). John Terry, whose real name is John Kiser, was shot at twice with a .44-caliber revolver by his former wife, Asa Thompson, but both sides went wide, and she ran up the alley and escaped. Terry dropped to the ground, yelling that he was killed, and was quickly arrested by the officers. "
