No SLT split

To the editor:

In marked contrast to Mr. Rosen, I do not believe the community is "split" on the subject of the SLT. The word split implies a division in to two, approximately equal, parts. What I see is a community that is overwhelmingly in favor of the completion of the SLT being held hostage by a relatively small but highly organized and vocal fringe element.

The members of the fringe element opposing the SLT's completion seem to represent special or vested interests and, in some cases, appear to be individuals who have no long-term affiliation with the Lawrence community who are simply in search of a liberal banner to carry.

Mr. Rosen did not have to specifically declare his affiliation with this fringe in his letter. For nearly 15 years, whenever any level of government "resolves" to take action on the SLT, the fringe threatens legal repercussions.

In my letter to the editor, I resolved to take the action of honking my horn whenever I pass the 23rd Street entrance to HINU to express my personal disappointment at their lack of support for their host community. Mr. Rosen counters by calling my behavior intimidating. He throws in some references to a potential hate crime, an implied threat of prosecution against me or any "fellow honkers" who might follow my lead, and finishes up with a little name calling. His tactics give him away!

In my opinion, the fact that issues affecting the safety and well being of Lawrence residents should be in the hands of the "500 American Indian tribes with Haskell ties" is just the latest example of "Really dumb" as it applies to the SLT.

Finally, I would like to assure Mr. Rosen that there is absolutely NO hate in this heart and perhaps caution him not to put too much stock in the opinion of his 5- and 8-year-old "experts." In a very few years, those same experts will undoubtedly be using similar pronouncements ("makes no sense, mean and dumb") to describe the actions he resolves to take against them for what he perceives to be a greater good.

Gary Stussie,

Lawrence
