Dan Herriage has high hopes for Veritas Christian School.

Enrollment is growing, and plans are in the works to build a high school within three years to meet the demand. Enrollment has nearly doubled within two years from 65 students to 120 students at the private school in Lawrence. The school, 256 N. Mich., currently serves students kindergarten through ninth grade.

Herriage, 55, said he's ready for the challenge.

"I love high school, and we're working on developing the high school for our students," he said. "We just need to find the right place. Land is so expensive."

Herriage replaces Peter Gitau, the former administrator of three years, who took a position with Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind.

Most recently, Herriage spent 13 years teaching in Guam at a private evangelical school that had 1,150 students. His wife, Louise, was the school's elementary principal.

"We went out under a three-year contract and ended up staying 13 years," Herriage said.

Herriage, who grew up in Glendale, Ariz., also served as headmaster and teacher at a Christian school in Arizona for several years. He received a theology degree from Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College in San Dimas, Calif., a bachelor's degree in elementary education at Southwestern College in Phoenix, and a master's degree of education through Bob Jones University in South Carolina while living in Guam.

This summer, Herriage and his wife returned to the United States to be closer to their family and now live in Lawrence. They have three grown children and are in the process of adopting a 6-year-old boy from Guam.
