Washington Roberto Luongo's 38 saves didn't come easy.
The Florida goalie halted two Washington breakaways and stoned Peter Bondra twice in the final 24 seconds as the Panthers hung on to beat the Capitals 2-1.
"He was fantastic," Washington coach Ron Wilson said. "He made some good saves against some top people."
Luongo stopped seven shots by Sergei Gonchar, six by Jaromir Jagr, five by Sylvain Cote, and four apiece by Chris Simon, Adam Oates and Bondra.
He recorded his 37th save on a shot by Bondra after the Capitals had pulled goalie Craig Billington from the net with 24 seconds remaining, then capped his brilliant evening by stopping another shot from Bondra 10 seconds later.
"It's never been one of my strong points," Luongo said of stopping 1-one-1 attacks. "But tonight was a pretty good start to get better."
The Capitals squandered four power-play shots including two from directly in front of a fallen Luongo midway through the third period after Florida's Bill Lindsay drew an unusual unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on a faceoff for twice swiping at Jaromir Jagr's leg.
Senators 4, Leafs 3
Ottawa Ottawa defensemen Karel Rachunek and Wade Redden each had two points as the Senators stopped Toronto's three-game winning streak with win over the Maple Leafs.
Held to a franchise-low 10 shots in a 3-1 loss in Toronto on Saturday, Ottawa got goals from Andre Roy, Mike Fisher, Marian Hossa and Rachunek despite directing just 16 shots at Curtis Joseph.
Gary Roberts and Alexander Mogilny each had three points for the Maple Leafs, who have lost eight of their last nine regular season games against the Senators.
Kings 3, Devils 2
East Rutherford, N.J. Ian Laperriere scored two goals Monday night, including the game-winner with 2:05 remaining.
The Kings, winners of three straight, also got a goal from Adam Deadmarsh while Felix Potvin made 25 saves.
The Devils, who have played five straight one-goal games, got goals from John Madden and Jay Pandolfo.
