Accidents send 2 to hospital

A rollover accident Monday afternoon sent one local teen-ager to the hospital.

The accident occurred at 3:22 p.m. Monday on East 1048 Road near the YSI Sports Complex.

Two teen-agers were in a Nissan passenger car, and the car rolled over, said Douglas County Sheriff's Lt. Kathy Tate. One teen-ager was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and the other was treated at the scene.

Tate said the Sheriff's Office would release more information today.

"The deputy said that he thought the driver lost control due to speed," she said.

One person is in critical condition after a one-car accident just after 2 p.m. Monday near the intersection of K-10 and Highway 40.

The woman lost control of her car, rolled several times and suffered severe injuries. She was transported by Life Star helicopter to the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

Witnesses said she was wearing her seatbelt.

Government: City manager praises Lawrence on 2001 progress

Despite a national economic downturn and fears of terrorism after Sept. 11, Lawrence fared well in 2001, City Manager Mike Wildgen told the Lawrence Rotary Club on Monday.

Speaking at a noon luncheon in the Hereford House restaurant, 4931 W. Sixth St., Wildgen recounted what he described as the city's major successes the past year. Among them were the opening of the Lawrence Aquatic Center and the start-up of public bus transport.

Wildgen also noted opening of the Lawrence Police Department's Training and Investigation Center, and continuing construction of a new fire station in east Lawrence and a new downtown Lawrence Arts Center.

Wildgen said 2002 brings new challenges, mainly in developing a budget to meet city needs. The city and county must also decide what to do about possible development south and west of Lawrence, he said.
