Former Florida strength and conditioning coordinator for football Mark Smith has been named head strength and conditioning coach for Kansas University.

"Mark is a highly respected strength coach who has been a vital part of one of the top programs in college football," KU coach Mark Mangino said Monday.

Smith, 37, will oversee the entire strength and conditioning program at KU, but primarily work with the football team.

Prior to his appointment at Florida, Smith spent five years as assistant strength and conditioning coach at North Carolina State in 1993-97.

Smith was a two-year starter, three-year letterman and co-captain at outside linebacker at N.C. State. A native of Kannapolis, N.C., Smith and his wife, Francis, have one son, Mark, Jr.
