— New Southern Methodist coach Phil Bennett rounded out his staff Monday by hiring former Kansas University wide receivers coach Clarence James and former Kansas State colleagues Bob Fello and Jim Gush.

James worked with Bennett at Oklahoma.

Fello, who coached at KU from 1988-94, was named assistant head coach and interior defensive line coach. Gush was named defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

James, the wide receivers coach at Kansas last year, held the same job at Oklahoma from 1992-98 and at Texas. He's also been at Texas Tech and North Texas.
