Ottawa house lost to fire

A rural Ottawa house was destroyed Saturday morning by a fire resulting from an overheated wood-burning stove.

About 9 a.m., Franklin County Sheriff Craig Davis said the fire was called in by an off-duty postal carrier who saw smoke coming out of the flue at 2675 Kentucky Road, about 3 miles southwest of Ottawa.

Davis said officers located a sleeping family in the upstairs bedroom and were able to get them out of the house safely. He said rescue workers also were able to salvage some of the contents of the house.

Davis said the house occupants, Roy Fields, his wife and their infant daughter, will be staying with friends or relatives.

Two accidents on I-35 attributed to weather

Icy roads caused two accidents Sunday morning on I-35 just south of the Williamsburg exit in Franklin County.

The first accident occurred at 5:35 a.m. near mile post 170. A 2001 Ford pickup driven by Gregory T. Moats, 49, of Overland Park, was southbound when he lost control, entered the median and rolled 1 3/4 times before coming to rest on the side of the truck. Moats was uninjured, but his passenger, Carla J. Moats, 52, Overland Park, was transported to Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, where she was treated and released.

A driver and three passengers were injured in a one-vehicle accident at 6:30 a.m. near mile post 169. A 1996 Dodge Van driven by Velmarie Johnson of Kansas City, Kan. was southbound when Johnson lost control, entering the median, and the car overturned on its left side.

Johnson and three passengers, Pamela Hullum, 39, Michael Hullum, 19, both of Kansas City, Kan., and Jennifer Kinney, 38, Lenexa, were all transported to Ransom Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.
