Police presence

After driving the area and viewing the Channel 6 report I just have to make a couple of comments:

1) Ms. Gorman is worried that drivers would "roll through" stop signs. Heck, they do that all over town now!

2) The city recently reworked Louisiana Street and included "bike lanes" north and south. Now, with the dividers in place, automobiles are forced to drive in the bike lanes. There isn't enough room left for both auto and bike lanes. Who has the right of way? I'm gonna figure it's me.

Now for the main observation. In over 40 years of driving, one thing I've noticed is that the best "traffic-calming device" is a police officer with a radar gun. Even better than that is an officer with a radar gun AND a chase car or two. It seems that Lawrence in its constant striving towards one-upmanship finds the hardest, most expensive means of accomplishing objectives.

It's time for a return to the basics. Make people responsible for their actions through a stiff fine. Begin a thorough program of traffic enforcement citywide. Crack down on the speeders, light runners, stop-sign runners and rollers.

John Hamm,

Lawrence
