Burlington For the first time in the program's five-year history, Free State High placed first in a wrestling tournament.
The Firebirds compiled 236 points to win the 14-team Burlington Invitational on Saturday. Emporia took second with 216 points.
"We've been waiting for this for three years," FSHS coach Darrell Andrew said. "Today things fell together."
Individual winners for Free State were Matt Somers (119 pounds), Anthony White (135), Kyle Frank (171), Justin Stevens (189) and Ian B(215). Stevens hiked his record to 15-0 and is Free State's lone undefeated wrestler.
Free State will wrestle this weekend at the two-day Basehor-Linwood tournament.
