Joan Arenas has joined Lawrence Memorial Hospital as director of the Emergency Department. As director of emergency services, Arenas is responsible for the delivery of emergency patient care. Her responsibilities also include handling business and financial planning, customer relations and clinical management. Arenas received 15 years of emergency nursing experience at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill. Arenas plans to pursue a master's degree at Kansas University.





Denise Barkley, Wellsville, is marketing her photographic work through a new business called Images of Life by Denise.

Barkley offers her products through a Web site, www.denise

barkley.com, and through a handful of stores in the area. Her products include greeting cards, calendars, invitations and note cards made from photographs she's taken during the past 10 years.

Honors and awards

Lawrence's city government has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Assn. for the city's comprehensive annual financial report. The certificate is the association's highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

Judges said Lawrence's report demonstrated a constructive "spirit of full disclosure" that clearly communicates the city's financial story and motivates potential users and user groups to read the report.

Ed Mullins, the city's finance director, received an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for preparing the financial report.





Lizabeth Luck, property manager for Master Plan Management in Lawrence, earned the Accredited Residential Manager certification from the Institute of Real Estate Management. The certification is given to managers of residential property who meet the institute's requirements in the areas of experience, education and ethical conduct.

The institute is a professional association affiliated with the National Association of Realtors. Luck also completed the Certified Professional of Occupancy course and is confirmed as a certified CPO by the National Affordable Housing Management Assn.

J. Brian Dreger of Brotsman & Dreger Inc., an Intuit-certified consultant and public accountant, will present a three-day series of hands-on, QuickBooks seminars Jan. 16-18 at the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, 734 Vt.

Independence Inc., will conduct a job fair from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 14 at the organization's offices, 2001 Haskell Ave.

Fifteen employers from the Lawrence area will be represented: Blue Skies Satellite Service; Carols Web; city of Lawrence; DST Systems Inc.; E&E Display Group; Kansas Union; Lawrence Memorial Hospital; Lawrence Paper Co.; Lawrence public schools; NCS Pearson; Sprint Corp.; Kansas University; Adecco; Century Personnel; and Kelly Services Inc.

Recent graduates from Independence Inc.'s Computer Learning Center Vocational Training program will participate. The fair is open to the public.

Consumer Credit Counseling Services will present a workshop, "Discover More Dollars," from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court. The workshop is designed to help participants map out a road to financial success.

The workshop is sponsored by Capitol Federal Savings and United Way of Douglas County.

During the next six months, the Lawrence/Douglas County Economic Development Board will address the review process of Horizon 2020's Strategic Economic Development Element. Co-chairs of the board are Shirley Martin-Smith, a former Lawrence mayor, and Charles Jones, who is a current Douglas County commissioner.

Lawrence and Douglas County residents are invited to learn about economic development in Douglas County by attending one of two free workshops in January.

The first meeting will be from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Lawrence Visitors Center, 402 N. Second St.

The second meeting will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Jan. 17 in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds, 21st and Harper streets.
