More rapes but fewer armed robberies were reported to Lawrence Police in 2001.

A look at statistics of the past two years, excluding December 2001, in various crime categories compiled by authorities shows minor fluctuations in rates.

Lawrence Police reports of aggravated, or armed, robbery show decline. There were 42 cases in 2000 and 36 in 2001. Rape reports were up with 34 in 2001 versus 28 in 2000.

Difference in the number of battery cases was more dramatic with 512 reported in 2000, declining to 316 in 2001.

Felony thefts involving more than $500 increased significantly from 497 in 2000 to 620 in 2001.

Also showing an increase were residential burglaries. A total of 259 were reported in 2001 while 160 were reported in 2000.

Sheriff's statistics showed a slight decrease in theft cases, from 128 in 2000 to 105 in 2001. Battery cases were similar, with 59 in 2000 dropping to 56 in 2001.

The sheriff combines burglaries and robbery statistics. There were 71 reported in 2000; 69 in 2001.

Sex crimes reported to the sheriff dropped by half, from 18 in 2000 to 9 in 2001.

Fatality traffic accidents in Douglas County increased in 2001. The Kansas Highway Patrol said there were 11 fatalities in 2001 and five in 2000. Sheriff's officers handled seven of those that occurred in 2001.
