Old home town - 100 years ago today

On Jan. 5, 1902, the Lawrence World reported, "This is the revival season on the churches, and this paper desires to say just one word to the revivalists. This town is ripe for harvest of souls, but they must be captured in the regular way. There is neither sense nor reason in an evangelist being a man who gets the people in fighting. Every great revival carries in the wake a town row that is never ending. What is wanted is to preach the love of the Lord Jesus Christ and leave this intolerant denouncing on your neighbors out of the question. Religion is more firmly established today than it is because we have become more tolerating, more liberal and more reasonable. Men are no longer scared in the church. It has long been realized that such converts are not worth anything. The men and women whose connection with the church is a benefit are those whose lives are earnest and honest. They have minds and use them. They are needed in the church, but to make the church attractive to them this ignorant, denouncing spirit must be left in the background."
