Nelson's wife ailing

Dallas Joy Nelson, wife of Dallas Mavericks head coach and general manager Don Nelson, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She expects to have surgery within a few weeks, then radiation treatment. Don Nelson said he expects to miss a couple of games to be with his wife for the surgery and treatment. Their son, assistant coach Donnie Nelson, will fill in.

Don Nelson underwent successful surgery for a cancerous prostate a year ago Friday.

Mystics' coach, GM quit

Washington Washington Mystics coach Tom Maher and general manager Melissa McFerrin resigned Friday, 412 months after the team finished last season tied for the WNBA's worst record. Maher, an Australian who was the league's first foreign coach, went 10-22.
