Police seek former manager for alleged bond violation

A former Taco Bell manager charged recently with sexual battery of a woman employee, allegedly returned to the restaurant Wednesday night in violation of his bond.

Lawrence Police now seek the man who entered Taco Bell, 1408 W. 23rd St., shortly before 11 p.m., Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. The man appeared intoxicated and was making employees nervous, Pattrick said.

He was gone by the time police arrived.

Last month the 31-year-old Lawrence man was arrested for allegedly grabbing a woman worker's buttocks. He was working at the fast-food store then as a manager. He was fired after the arrest, restaurant officials said.

The man was free on $2,000 bond with a court appearance scheduled Tuesday. One of the conditions attached to his bond was that he not return to that Taco Bell.

Injured customer wins suit against Wal-Mart

A Douglas County jury Thursday decided Wal-Mart Stores Inc., owed thousands of dollars to a Lawrence woman who injured a knee and wrist in a fall at the store at 3300 Iowa.

Constance Bedeau was awarded a total of $58,850 in damages. In her lawsuit filed about a year ago in Douglas County District Court, Bedeau said she fell on a slick floor on Aug. 10, 1999.

The jury, which began hearing testimony Wednesday in Judge Jack Murphy's courtroom, deliberated more than two hours Thursday before reaching a verdict.

The jury awarded Bedeau $10,850 for pain and suffering, $18,000 for medical expenses, and $30,000 for economic losses.

Law officers report battery trying to detain runaway

Two Lawrence Police officers and a Douglas County Sheriff's deputy reported they were battered Wednesday afternoon while attempting to take a runaway into custody.

About 3:15 p.m., a police officer went to a home in the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue to pick up a reported runaway, Police Lt. Steve Zarnowiec said.

The male officer found two 13-year-old girls there. When he informed the runaway she'd be taken into custody, the second juvenile threatened to harm the officer, Zarnowiec said. The officer tried to arrest the second juvenile for disorderly conduct, but she struck him several times and tried to get away, Zarnowiec said.

The runaway tried to leave the house, but a second police officer arrived and stopped her. She kicked the second officer several times, Zarnowiec said.

The second juvenile then tried to leave but encountered a sheriff's deputy who had arrived for additional backup.

The juvenile pushed the deputy against the wall before officers detained her, Zarnowiec said.
