Harrington accepts Senior Bowl invite
Mobile, Ala. Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington has accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl The Heisman Trophy finalist will join quarterback Kurt Kittner of Illinois on the North roster for the Jan. 26 game, Senior Bowl officials said Thursday.
Harrington, the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year, saved one of his best games for last. He threw for 350 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Ducks (11-1) to a 38-16 victory over Colorado on Tuesday night in the Fiesta Bowl.
The 6-foot-4, 222-pounder threw for 2,414 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior, the second-highest single season total in school history. He was intercepted just five times.
Harrington finished fourth in the Heisman voting.
Television ratings dip for Orange Bowl
New York The Jan. 2 Bowl Championship Series game wasn't nearly as big a TV draw as last year. With little drama and no national title implications, No. 5 Florida's 56-23 victory over No. 6 Maryland in the Orange Bowl drew a 9.5 overnight rating and 15 share on ABC Sports.
That's down 24 percent from the Jan. 2 BCS game in 2001, though it's just 1 percent lower than in 2000.
Rape investigators traveling to California
Boulder, Colo. Authorities investigating an alleged gang rape at a party attended by Colorado players and potential recruits plan to travel to California to conduct interviews.
Joe Pelle, commander of the Boulder police detective division, said that members of his department and the university police department will make the trip. CU police Lt. Tim McGraw said the off-campus interviews could happen while students remain on holiday break, which ends Jan. 14.
A student told police she was attacked at a Dec. 7 party to entertain recruits. A half-dozen players and about 15 recruits attended the party and alcohol was present, according to witnesses. Police have not made any arrests or named suspects in the case, which is being handled by city and university authorities.
CU officials have refused to identify the recruits brought to Boulder the weekend the alleged rape occurred.
OSU coach back at work
Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma State football coach Les Miles returned to work Wednesday after having surgery last week in Cleveland, Ohio. The surgery was performed Dec. 24 to relieve "increased intra-cranial pressure."
