San Diego — Iowa State understands how fortunate it is to be one of the few undefeated women's basketball teams in the nation.
Angie Welle scored four of her 21 points in overtime as No. 5 Iowa State beat San Diego, 69-67, in the championship game of the Surf-N-Slam Hoop Classic late Sunday night.
Iowa State (12-0) rallied from a 15-point deficit late in the second half to send it to overtime.
"The team that played the hardest and deserved to win the game didn't," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said.
The Cyclones scored the first four points of the extra period on baskets by Lindsey Wilson and Welle for a 67-63 lead with 2:39 left.
Welle hit two free throws with 28.4 seconds left to give the Cyclones a 69-63 lead, but San Diego scored the next four points, including Kerri Nakamoto's basket with 17.3 seconds left to cut it to 69-67.
