Winston B. Harwood

Services for Winston B. Harwood, 85, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Harwood died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He had lived in Lawrence most of his life.

He was born July 19, 1916, in Lawrence, the son of William T. and Emma Jane (Cannon) Harwood.

He attended Kansas University for two years. He was a captain in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific.

Mr. Harwood owned Harwood Wholesale Meat Company from 1947 to 1993, when he retired. A lifelong Republican, he was the 1972 candidate for 44th District state representative.

He was a 60-year member of Plymouth Congregational Church, and served a term on its Board of Trustees. He was also a member of Lawrence Rotary Club, KU Alumni Association, Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion and Alvamar Country Club.

He married Ruth Reisner on Sept. 25, 1949, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter Harriet Harwood, Dallas; three sons, Robert W. and Stuart B., both of Lawrence, and Douglas E., Prairie Village; a brother, Eldon E., Lawrence; a sister, Margaret E. Harwood, Lawrence; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the music fund at Plymouth Congregational Church, sent in care of the mortuary.
