PlayStation 2 offers Britney video game

No chance of a date with Britney Spears? There’s always “the next best thing.”

Adding to her millions, the 20-year-old will soon star in “Britney’s Dance Beat,” a video game that features a virtual 3-D likeness of the pop princess.

The sultry singer is being paid a seven-figure fee for allowing her likeness to be used on the new video game, scheduled to be released in May on PlayStation 2.

“It looks like Britney, it moves like Britney, it’s the next best thing to Britney,” said Liz Pieri, a spokeswoman for THQ Inc. of Calabasas Hills, Calif., the game’s manufacturer. “It’s simply wild.”

Spears submitted to an hourslong image scan in order to have the most realistic version of herself available for the game, according to the company.

“Britney’s very protective of her image, but was quite pleased with our rendering,” Pieri said. “Her mom likes it, too.”

“Britney’s Dance Beat” will allow computer gamers to compete as Spears’ backup dancers and edit their own videos starring her.

Pieri expects it to be a hit, similar to “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider,” which features the video gaming world’s current pinup star.

“Britney’s Dance Beat” is the latest in a series of nonmusical outings for Spears. Her first film, “Crossroads,” is currently in theaters.
