KU close to final ’02 schedule

Kansas University could have its 2002 football schedule finalized by the end of the week.

The Jayhawks are slated to open with back-to-back road games at Iowa State (Aug. 31) and UNLV (Sept. 7), but Kansas athletic director Al Bohl and football coach Mark Mangino have been trying to shuffle the schedule and possibly move one of those games to the end of the season.

Kansas currently has open dates on Sept. 28 and Nov. 23 the date the Jayhawks and Cyclones originally were scheduled to play according to KU’s official Web site. It’s likely a 12th opponent will fill the Sept. 28 opening.

According to the Western Athletic Conference Web site’s 2002 composite football schedule, that foe will be Tulsa, which would play host to the Jayhawks. The Golden Hurricanes were 1-10 overall last season and 0-8 in the WAC.

With no other changes, KU would have home games against Southwest Missouri State (Sept. 14), Bowling Green (Sept. 21), Colorado (Oct. 12), Texas A&M (Oct. 19), Kansas State (Nov. 2) and Oklahoma State (Nov. 16).

Including Tulsa, the Jayhawks would travel to ISU, UNLV, Tulsa, Baylor (Oct. 5), Missouri (Oct. 26) and Nebraska (Nov. 9).
