— Santa Fe Trail senior Janelle Arnold refused to let her Chargers lose.

Arnold scored a game-high 22 points to lead the top-seeded Chargers to 70-61 victory over Wamego in the first round of the Abilene Class 4A sub-state girls basketball tournament on Monday at SFT.

"You could see Janelle pick the team up and say, 'We're not going to lose this game,'" said SFT coach Brenda Dahl, whose squad has won nine in a row to improve to 20-1. "She had a great game."

The Chargers, ranked No. 3 in the Class 4A coaches' poll, led 49-33 entering the fourth quarter. Wamego erupted for 28 points in the final period.

"It was a lot closer than we wanted it to be," Dahl said. "They played a great game and we weren't at top of our defensive game and that hurt us."

Three other Chargers scored in double figures. Lindsay Boss scored 14 points, Leslie Wurdeman 11 and Melissa Ball 10.

SFT will play the Chapman-Concordia winner at Thursday in the sub-state semifinals in Abilene. The Chapman-Concordia game Monday was postponed because of weather.
