Guitar ensemble to play music from around the world

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will appear at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lied Center, marking its first concert in Lawrence.

The quartet will perform a variety of songs, ranging from African, Celtic and Latin music to classics such as Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella” and Bizet’s “Carmen Suite.”

Recognized as one of the nation’s premier instrumental ensembles, the quartet is energetic and versatile. Its transcriptions of concert masterworks provide a fresh look at the music of the past, while the group’s interpretations of works from the contemporary and world-music realms break new ground.

This season, the quartet is performing Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto Andaluz” throughout the United States and in Spain, as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of Rodrigo’s birth. The quartet also will be guest performers with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

In recent seasons, the quartet has been heard on Minnesota Public Radio’s “St. Paul Sunday Morning” and seen with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops on PBS’ “Evening at Pops”; CNN’s “Show Biz Today”; CBS’ “Saturday Morning”; and A&E’s “Breakfast with the Arts.”

The musicians have recorded two CDs and will release a new recording in August.
