Cochran closing in on 1,000-point mark

Jayhawks held Husker senior without field goal in Kansas victory at fieldhouse

? Cary Cochran has never been guarded like he was guarded in Nebraska’s 96-57 loss to Kansas on Jan. 9 at Allen Fieldhouse.

“They didn’t allow me to do anything,” Cochran, NU’s 6-foot-1 senior sharpshooter from Minden, Iowa, said of KU’s Kirk Hinrich and Jeff Boschee, who limited Cochran to three shots all misses in 20 minutes.

“They picked me up at halfcourt, and they didn’t leave. There could have been a fire next to me and they wouldn’t have left,” added Cochran, who had his streak of 35 straight games with a three-pointer snapped versus KU.

You better believe Cochran, Nebraska’s career leader in three-pointers made (246) hopes to hit at least one in today’s rematch against Kansas. Tipoff is 3:05 p.m. at Devaney Center.

He has 997 points in his career needing one trey to become the 23rd 1,000-point scorer in NU history.

“They’ve got a lot of guys who can really shoot the basketball,” KU coach Roy Williams said. “Cary Cochran is a youngster who has made a lot of shots against us. We must get out to their three-point shooters and try to pressure them with our inside game.”

Cochran he averages 12.8 points on 40.1 percent three-point shooting has made 23 of 46 threes in eight career games versus KU. A year ago, he scored 17 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting in an 84-62 loss to the Jayhawks in Allen Fieldhouse and hit for 14 points on 4-of-9 three-point shooting in NU’s narrow 78-74 loss to KU last season in Lincoln.

He’s not the Cornhuskers’ only weapon. Freshman Jake Muhleisen and senior John Robinson average 11.7 and 10.6 points respectively.

KU bashed the Huskers by 39 points in the first meeting. Nick Collison had 20 points, while Drew Gooden and Jeff Boschee both scored 16, Kirk Hinrich 13 and Wayne Simien 12. Brennon Clemmons and Robinson had 16 apiece for coach Barry Collier’s Huskers, who trailed 57-24 at halftime.

“They’ve had some good wins. They beat Texas Tech at their place,” Williams said of an 80-69 NU victory on Jan. 30. “At Texas they were right in the game until the end,” he added of a 77-66 loss on Jan. 19. “I think Barry probably feels they have improved a great deal.”
