Bookman wins 200 at Big 12 Indoor

? Kansas University’s Leo Bookman won the 200-meter dash in school-record time Saturday in the Big 12 Indoor track and field meet.

Bookman won the 200 in 21.03 and placed third in the 60 meters in 6.76.

“I felt really confident going in,” Bookman said. “A win is a win and I’ll take it. Hopefully it will put me in the top 20 in the nation.”

KU finished seventh in the men’s standings with 60 points and sixth in the women’s standings with 62 points. Nebraska won the men’s meet and Texas the women’s meet.

“I think we did really good,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “We did better than last year, and that’s what we wanted to do. We didn’t necessarily get our points the way I thought we would, but we had a lot of athletes really do well because they are competitors.”

The KU men received second-place finishes Saturday from Brian Blachly in the 1,000 meters (2:25.57), Benaud Shirley in the triple jump (5012) and Vadim Gvozdetskiy in the pole vault (17-534).

For the KU women, Kim Clark placed third in the 600-yard run (1:23.25), Katy Eisenmenger was fourth in the mile (4:50.52), Laura Lavoie was fifth in the 800 meters (2:11.06), Jennie Wonder was sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.52) and Courtney Deutsch was seventh in the 1,000 meters (2:57.90). Brooklyn Hann leaped 41-112 for second place in the triple while while Brandi Taylor went 39-5 for sixth.

Sondra Rauterkus cleared a personal-best 5-812 for fourth in the high jump.

Nebraska, meanwhile, received a lift from shot putter Carl Myerscough. On his third attempt of the afternoon, Myerscough threw the shot 69 feet 2 inches, breaking the Big 12 Indoor meet record and the all-time conference indoor record and eclipsing the Devaney Center mark set just two weeks ago by Adam Nelson at the professional Nike International meet.

“I really want to prove a point and basically I think I did a good job of that,” Myerscough said. “It was a great relief, too. There was so much pressure on me. After that throw, I was just exhausted.”

Myerscough’s record-setting throw helped boost Nebraska to its third straight Big 12 Indoor Championship. The Cornhuskers have won five of the six indoor championships since the Big 12 was formed.

Nebraska finished with 105.5 points, Texas was second with 97 and Kansas State finished third with 93.5.

On the women’s side of the meet, Texas knocked off two-time defending champion Nebraska. The win was the Longhorns’ third Big 12 indoor title. Nebraska has won the other three conference indoor meets.

Texas clinched its victory by setting a Big 12 Indoor record in the meets final, the 4×400 meter relay, with a time of 3:34.86.

Texas had 107 points, Nebraska finished with 103 and Kansas State was third with 89.5.
