Bicyclist struck by car

An accident Friday afternoon sent a Kansas University bicyclist to the hospital.

Joseph Bohland, 21, was pedaling north on Mississippi Street when he was struck by a southbound 2001 Nissan as it turned left into the parking garage, said Lt. Schuyler Bailey of the KU Public Safety Office.

The car’s driver, KU student Tanner Fortney, 20, was cited for failing to yield, Bailey said.

Bohland was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The accident occurred about 1:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Mississippi Street.

Officials investigate thefts of construction equipment

A series of thefts from businesses involving losses of more than $3,000 worth of construction equipment has been under investigation by Baldwin Police and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Information about the incidents was recently released by law enforcement officials. Reports also have been turned over to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review, Sheriff’s Lt. Kathy Tate said.

Baldwin Feed Co., 1600 High St., lost nearly $2,700 worth of tools and construction materials, Tate said. The thefts occurred between Aug. 1, 2001, and Dec. 4, 2001. Thieves broke into the building in taking the material.

Heritage Tractor Inc. 915 Industrial Park Road, also reported items missing. Seven floodlights and 300 gallons of unleaded gasoline were taken, with losses totaling $676. The thefts occurred and were reported Jan. 15.

No arrests have been made.

Spencer Consort to perform Bach, others at museum

The Spencer Consort will perform “Bach, Pseudo-Bach and Others” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Central Court of the Helen Foresman Spencer Museum of Art on the Kansas University campus.

The program includes Johann S. Bach’s “Sonata for Violin in B Minor, BWV 1014” for violin and harpsichord; a pseudo-Bach work, “Cantata, BWV 189” for solo tenor, flute, recorder, violin and basso continuo; a sonata for two flutes and basso continuo by Anna Bon; a Handel trio sonata; and three Renaissance Spanish songs.

The Spencer Consort is a period instrument ensemble that plays at the museum. Its members are Genaro Mendez, tenor and assistant professor of voice; Joy Laird, Baroque flutist and recorder player who teaches privately in Lawrence; Paul Laird, Baroque cellist and associate professor of musicology; John Boulton, flute professor; Chung-Hoon Peter Chun, assistant professor of viola; and Tony Bushard, doctoral student in musicology.

The free concert is open to the public.

Hughes poetry circles set to begin in Kansas cities

Poetry circles beginning Sunday will take the words of Langston Hughes to five Kansas communities.

The circles  in Norton, Hays, Independence, Iola and Topeka  are funded by a $6,600 grant from the Kansas Humanities Council.

The two-month circles, which are facilitated by experts from several Kansas and Missouri colleges and universities, focus on Hughes’ “Not Without Laughter,” “The Collected Poems,” “The Big Sea” and “The Best of Simple.”

Each group typically includes about 25 to 30 people. A similar circle last fall in Lawrence attracted more than 50 people, so it was divided into two groups.

Economic Development Board plans to meet in Lecompton

Members of the Lawrence-Douglas County Economic Development Board will be in Lecompton to receive input on future strategies to attract jobs and industry to the county.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Northeast Kansas Education Service Center, 620 Woodson. The meeting is the second of four the board will have to gather comments as it prepares to rewrite the economic development chapter of Horizon 2020.

The board met in Baldwin this week and will hold meetings in Eudora and Lawrence, but times and dates for those meetings have not yet been set.

Board members hope to have the new plan written by June to present to city and county commissioners for approval.

Half-naked man surprises fellow Lawrence motorist

A woman was startled about 1 p.m. Monday while she drove in the 600 block of West 23rd Street when she saw a half-naked man in a car next to her, Lawrence Police said Friday.

The man was naked from the waist down, police reported. The man raised his lower body high enough for the 20-year-old Lawrence woman to see as the suspect pulled alongside her car, according to the police report.

The suspect was described as an American Indian in his 20s driving a light blue and gray two-door car. No arrest has been made.

Rep. Dennis Moore continues meetings with NATO group

U.S. Congressman Dennis Moore is in Europe as part of a congressional delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Moore, D-Kan., is participating in discussions with legislators from NATO nations about economic and security concerns shared by allied nations.

He recently completed a series of meetings with allied legislators at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.

Wednesday, the delegation took part in the annual meeting of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, as well as meeting with OECD Secretary General Donald Johnson.

Sessions on defense, the environment and international economics will be conducted by the British-American Parliamentary Group in London.
