LHS girls rally past Pioneers – Lawrence 51, Leavenworth 48

? After trailing from the start, Lawrence High’s girls basketball team caught fire in the fourth quarter and came from behind to claim a 51-48 regular-season-ending victory over Leavenworth on Thursday.

Mandy Amyx scored 12 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter. Josie Polk led the Lions (8-12) with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

“We were making our run in the third quarter, and we got one of their best players in foul trouble and we really turned it on,” Lawrence coach Kristin Mallory said. “We got the ball to Mandy well, and we went to a little trap defense and got the ball to the other end. We converted a lot of shots at the end and hit a bunch of free throws to seal it.”

The Lions played most of the game without point guard Leigh DeBiasse, who suffered what Mallory believed was an allergic reaction to medication. DeBiasse played early, then left at halftime for a trip to an emergency room.

“Jodie Cochrane, our sophomore point guard, only had one quarter to spare, and she played well in the third quarter,” Mallory said. “Then Hallie Fitzgerald took over. She’s not asked to play much point, and she did a nice job for us.”
