Dorothy Burkholder Maloney

Memorial services for Dorothy Burkholder Maloney, 90, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church Chapel. Interment in Pioneer Cemetery will be at a later date. She donated her body to Kansas University Medical Center.

Mrs. Maloney died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. She had been a resident of Lawrence since 1945.

She was born Nov. 24, 1911, in Berlin, Pa., the daughter of Harry B. and Hattie (McDowell) Burkholder. She grew up in Greencastle, Pa.

Mrs. Maloney graduated from Shippensburg College in 1932 and taught English from 1933 to 1940 at Washington Heights High School near Waynesboro, Pa. She received her master’s degree in education from Pennsylvania State College in 1941.

She was a 57-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lawrence, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and youth group sponsor. She was a participant in the Audio-Reader program for more than a decade and was a volunteer at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for 37 years. She was also a member of Zodiac Club.

She married James Maloney on Sept. 10, 1940, in Greencastle, Pa. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, John C. Maloney, Denver; two daughters, Nancy Jean Rich, Denver, and Kathy Maloney Heerwald, Lawrence; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the church or to Audio-Reader, sent in care of the mortuary.
