KU women’s golf places third

? Kansas University’s women’s golf team placed third at the two-day, three-round Islander Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at the 5,900-yard, par-76 Kings Crossing Golf and Country Club.

Texas-El Paso won the team title with 952 strokes. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was second at 956, and KU was third at 963. Kansas State placed fourth with 964 strokes.

“I am extremely happy for our team,” KU coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “This is the first time all five golfers shot in the 70s, which is a huge step for KU golf. I am pleased with how we came back after the first round to finish third.”

Junior Jill MacDonald led Kansas with a share of ninth place, shooting a three-round score of 239. Sophomore Jennifer Bawanan (242) finished the tournament in a tie for 17th place, while junior Heather Rose carded a 244 and tied for 20th. Tiffany Kruggel capped off the tournament with a career-low score of 71.

“I am really excited about how well I shot in the final round,” Kruggel said. “I just hope that it is a start of something great for our team in the upcoming months.”

Junior Kristy Straub fired a 249 for the three rounds and completed the tournament in a tie for 35th place. Sophomore Tegan Thornberry tied for 57th place with a three-round total of 260.
