Area Girls Roundup: Santa Fe Trail clinches league

? It was business as usual for Santa Fe Trail’s girls basketball team on Tuesday night.

Despite clinching the Kaw Valley League title with a 65-45 win at Perry-Lecompton, the Chargers feel they still have one more wrung on the ladder to climb.

“We’re going to celebrate more when we’ve finished the job,” SFT coach Brenda Dahl said. “We want to finish the league undefeated. That was one of our goals this year, to finish the league undefeated.”

Santa Fe Trail (18-1 overall, 15-0 league) travels to Lansing on Friday.

The Chargers were sparked by a balanced attack against the Kaws. SFT had four players Janelle Arnold 16, Alison Creek 15, Melissa Ball 15 and Leslie Wurdeman 12 score in double figures.

The Chargers started slow, trailing 9-7 after the first quarter, before unleashing a 23-11 surge in the second quarter. SFT pushed its lead to 49-35 after three quarters.

“This is a big one,” Dahl said. “It clinched the league title for us. We feel good about that. We really had to battle. It was a good win for us. We had a slow start, obviously, but the girls did a nice job.”

Shannon Wilson led the Kaws (4-15) with 23 points.
