Old home town – 40 and 100 years ago today

IN 1962

Historic Weaver’s Department Store, Lawrence’s oldest and the largest retail operation in town, was sold to a Kansas corporation with Larry Flannery, longtime manager, to serve as president and manager.

IN 1902

On Feb. 16, 1902, the Lawrence Journal told in a story about “Snow on Sidewalks”: “If the city marshal and police would do their duty and enforce the ordinance in regard to cleaning snow from the sidewalks, the walks of Lawrence would be in a passable condition. The police have not done their duty, and the walks are in miserable shape. People who cleaned their walks yesterday morning did it with little exertion, and there was no snow on them last night, but they have to wade through the snow on the neighbors walk because the police do not enforce the city ordinance.”
