Arthur and Christina Hess, Lawrence, announce the adoption of their daughter, Lauren Kathleen Akia, born Jan. 1, 2001, in Calcutta, India. She arrived home on June 4, 2001, and became a U.S. citizen on Jan. 24, 2002.

Maternal Grandparents are Gary and Connie Hart, Leawood. Paternal grandparents are the late Ora "Bud" and Evelyn Hess.

Raymond Pearson, Baldwin, celebrated his 97th birthday Tuesday. Pearson is a lifelong resident of the Baldwin area. He was a farmer. His children are Ralph and Marja Pearson, Baldwin, and Elton and Mary Haid, Lawrence. He has three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Samuel Knowlton, 18, son of Danette Michaels, Lawrence, and Thomas "Tucker" Knowlton, Lawrence, has been named a National Merit Finalist. Samuel is a senior at Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, Colo.

A black polled Gelbvieh bull bred and raised by Dave and Cindy Judd, Pomona, was proclaimed National Champion Bull at the American Gelbvieh Assn.'s National Show. The show was held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show, Denver.

Will Krebs, Oskaloosa, has been awarded the Board of Governors Scholar Award from Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Krebs.

Jarrett Johnson, Baldwin, and Scott Smith, Lawrence, have been named to the 2001 President's List at Truman State University, Kirksville, Mo., by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Johnson is the son of Michael and Kathleen Johnson. Smith is the son of Mark and Margery Smith.

Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Mo., announces area students who made honors during the 2001 fall semester. Students named to the President's Honor Roll received a 4.0 grade-point average. Students listed on the Academic Honor Roll earned at least a 3.5 GPA.
