Bohl mum on Allen’s contract

AD says Kansas to honor former coach's pact

Former Kansas University football coach Terry Allen might be talking to Iowa State about a job, but KU athletic director Al Bohl isn’t talking about Allen’s contract with the Jayhawks.

“We really don’t talk about employees’ contracts,” Bohl said Thursday, asked about the specifics of Allen’s deal and a possible buyout. “I will tell you what we’re prepared to do and that is honoring all past contracts and deals.

“That (a buyout) is all part of the equation. We’ve already sat down with his attorney and are honoring any deal.”

Allen, who was 20-33 in four-plus seasons at Kansas before being dismissed with three games remaining last season, reportedly has been approached by ISU coach Dan McCarney about being the Cyclones’ tight ends coach.

Allen received an annual base salary of $125,612 during the 2001 fiscal year.

He also was guaranteed a minimum annual amount of $150,000 from the radio and television package, and he received $30,000 annually from the school’s contract with Nike.

Asked about the contracts of Allen’s assistants, Bohl said, “We’re honoring all their contracts. Normally what happens is, if they get another job, that’s good, but everything is based on the agreements made and contracts with each individual.”

New KU coach Mark Mangino retained Clint Bowen and Travis Jones from last year’s staff, while Clarence James and Rob Bolks have been hired by Southern Methodist and Northern Iowa respectively.

Allen’s defensive coordinator/assistant head coach, Tom Hayes and co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer each received two-year pacts prior to last season. Hayes was to be paid an annual salary of $120,000, while Scherer earned $100,000 a year.

Sam Pittman ($88,000), Tim Burke ($86,913), Johnny Barr ($78,125) and Jay Johnson ($62,373) were working with one-year deals. None of them has been hired elsewhere yet.
