KU bands combine for classical concert

The University Band and the KU Concert Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lied Center.

The University Band will perform “Variation Overture” by Clifton Williams, “Epinicion” by John Paulson, “Overture for Winds” by Charles Carter, “Blessed Are They” by Johannes Brahms and “Folk Dances” by Dmitri Shostakovitch.

The Concert Band, conducted by Tom Stidham, associate professor of music, will perform “Liturgical Music for Band” by Martin Mailman, “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “In Praise of Gentle Pioneers” by David Holsinger, “Flag of Stars” by Gordon Jacob and “Porgy and Bess” arranged by KU music professor James Barnes.

Admission is $7 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Box Office, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall Box Office, 864-3982; and the Student Union Activities Box Office, 864-3477.

Abilene theater sets auditions

Abilene The Great Plains Theatre Festival is holding auditions for its 2002 season. Actors of college, high school and younger ages are needed.

The season includes “Winnie the Pooh,” April 17-May 3; “Godspell,” June 7-23; “Nunsense II,” July 12-28; “Over the River and Through the Woods,” Aug. 16-Sept. 1; “Get Happy (The Music of Harold Alden),” Sept. 20-Oct. 6; “Perfect Wedding,” Oct. 25-Nov. 10; and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” Dec. 6-22.

Auditions are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to

4 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Tietjens Performing Arts Center, 300 N. Mulberry.
