FSHS girls tumble to Raiders

? Lauren Wright improved upon her school single-game three-point goal record, but Free State couldn’t quite catch Shawnee Mission South.

Wright, who twice before set the school record of five three-pointers, hit seven treys on Tuesday, but the Raiders held on for a 56-50 girls basketball victory over the Firebirds.

SM South led throughout and had a 10-point lead in the first half.

“We were a little impatient offensively,” FSHS coach Craig Hershiser. “That allowed them to get in a transition game and that broke them out to a 10-point lead. We cut it two five by halftime and cut it down to two in the fourth quarter. It was two and we had the ball, but we missed a shot and missed the follow shot, and they were able to run some time off the clock and hit some free throws.”

Wright led the Firebirds (6-9 overall, 2-4 Sunflower League) with 23 points. Jamie Stanclift added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Stacie Garland had seven points and five assists.

Point guard Julie Seidel didn’t score for Free State, but she played all 32 minutes and didn’t have a turnover.

“We played real hard,” Hershiser said. “We competed very well. We did a lot of things a team is supposed to do. I was pleased with the effort by all the kids. Everybody did some good things to get us in the game.”

SM South’s Laura Friederich led all scorers with 26 points.

Free State will play host to Shawnee Mission Northwest on Friday.
