Topeka ? With the partisan margin in Congress about as tight as it can be between Republicans and Democrats, the Bush administration apparently is taking no chances with Kansas congressional redistricting.

Gov. Bill Graves and Sen. David Adkins, R-Leawood, chairman of the Senate Reapportionment Committee, confirmed Monday they have received calls from President Bush’s chief strategist, Karl Rove, about redistricting.

Graves talked, but Adkins said he wasn’t available when the White House called.

“It hasn’t been intense, but they have checked in,” Adkins said of the White House urging that Republicans not give any advantage.

Graves’ spokesman, Don Brown, said the governor told Rove that congressional plans here were still evolving. Despite Republican dominance in Kansas, Adkins’ committee has failed to muster approval for any of several proposals.

Lawrence has been at the center of the disputes. It is currently in the 3rd Congressional District, represented by U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore, the only Democrat in the Kansas delegation. Plans for Lawrence range from keeping it in the 3rd, moving it to the 2nd District, or splitting it between the 3rd and 2nd.
